The Allure of Gambling

Gambling involves wagering or betting money and other valuables on games of chance or on the outcome of sporting events. Although some persons look upon it as sinful, minor forms - such as a friendly poker game, a charity raffle, or a church bingo party - are widely practiced and are generally considered simple entertainment.

Most popular gambling games include roulette, slot machines, bingo, dice games, keno, number games, and poker and other cards games. Gamblers also bet on a wide range of sporting events such horse and dog races, cockfighting, basketball, football, boxing, baseball and jai alai, as well as such events as political elections. In a well-organized gambling, the operator always had the odds over the bettor with a less-than-even chance of winning over the operator. In sporting events, the bookmaker or bookie, always determines the odds in his favor and at the same time responsible of receiving and paying off winning bets.

Heavy gambling tends to lead to indebtedness, especially among habitual gamblers. This is where gambling leads to abuse of individual and family finances. These are individuals who, regardless of their losses, are convinced that "next time" they will win. Another objection is that its operations are especially attractive to gangsters, mafias and other lawless elements. Revenue from both legal and illegal gambling is the main source of income for organized crime. Such income is invested in loan-sharking (usury), prostitution, narcotics dealings, gun running and other illegal activities.

In the United States, most states permit some forms of gambling under laws passed by the state. A few states allow only the playing of bingo as a means of fund-raising for charitable or non-profit organizations. Gambling casinos are legal in Nevada and in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and casinos in riverboats are permitted in Iowa and Illinois. Some states allow draw-poker parlors to be operated. Many states operate lotteries and many others permit the operations of horse-racing or dog-racing tracks. There are also states that operate off-track betting establishments. Large amounts are also wagered on sporting events such as boxing, football, baseball and basketball. With the advent of internet as an electronic gateway, online lottery is also being played anywhere in the world and advance the nature of gambling.

Federal laws set guidelines in the conduct of gambling in every state. Some laws restrict the transfer of gambling information and related devices from one state to another.

History reports that gambling existed in China, India, and Babylonia hundreds of years before Christ, later spread westward through Greece and Rome and was popular for centuries. Illegal gambling soon became a large-scale vice and was banned because of its economic and social effects on society. However, with its growing popularity, laws regulating it were passed in order for the people to enjoy it in moderation. Proceeds of regulated gambling events were used to finance governments as well as churches, schools and private enterprises.

Gambling, indeed, is one whopping source of revenue for the government as well as its proponents and promoters, but it has immensely affected people's economic, social and moral aspects.
