How Do Experts Assess Gambling Addiction?

Due to the mushrooming of casinos and other gambling establishments in different countries, many people are hooked with the various games that can be played in these places. There are two categories of games offered in casinos which are the beatable and unbeatable games. This only means that there are games that merely depend on one's luck and there are games that require certain skills. Hence, to increase the chances of improving one's winnings in these games, it will be helpful if players have deep knowledge about how the different games are played.

Social analysts found that players who visit gambling establishments have different motives. Some players only visit casinos to have fun or for recreational purposes. There are also people who go to gambling establishments to escape from the problems that they face. Lastly, some of them participate in gambling games because they are patients suffering from the medical condition known as compulsive gambling.

Many people oppose the legalization of gambling in their countries because they believe that gambling have negative social and personal consequences. One of the risks associated with the legalization of gambling is the increased rate of gambling addiction. Based on researches conducted by experts, a small proportion of adult gamblers are now proven to be victims of compulsive gambling disorder.

In order to prevent the improving number of gambling addicts, physician Sheila Blume together with social analyst Henry Lesieur, developed the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) method. This method can efficiently examine the level of addiction of a person to any event that involves betting. In addition, the method is composed of questions that can assess one's perception on gambling, which includes the amount of money a person bets in a game.

Aside from the SOGS, the Gamblers Anonymous also asks suspected gambling addicts a series of questions to determine the severity of one's interest in participating in gambling events. Some of the questions asked by the association to their new members are the effect of their gambling behavior on their work performance as well as the urge of a person to win back one's losses.

It is important that gambling addicts be treated as early as possible because compulsive gambling can also lead to other troubles such as a person's involvement in illegal acts like illegal drug trafficking and theft. To save patients from these problems, psychiatrists and counselors offer their services to people who exhibit the symptoms of the mental disorder. It is important that one's interest in participating in gambling events be regulated because if gambling addiction is not prevented, the number of people suffering from compulsive gambling might increase.
